Shibari ropes

Shibari ropes are ropes specifically designed for Japanese artistic bondage. Shibari is an ancient art in which the bound body becomes an aesthetic and sensory work of art — precise geometric figures, carefully studied pressures, and a deep connection between the rigger (the person tying) and the model. The ropes are the tools of this art.

In summary: shibari ropes are ropes dedicated to Japanese artistic bondage. Materials: cotton (beginners, soft), jute (traditional, intermediate users), silk (sensual, experienced users). Standard lengths of 7–10 metres, 6 mm diameter. A practice that requires learning — stay on the ground when starting out and avoid suspension without training. As much an art as it is play.

In our shop, shibari ropes appeal to couples who want to go beyond classic BDSM accessories. Handcuffs and restraints are functional — shibari ropes add an artistic and meditative dimension. It is a slow, precise, deeply connected practice.

The origins and philosophy of shibari

Shibari (also known as kinbaku) has its roots in the Japanese restraint techniques of hojojutsu, historically used by medieval law enforcement. This martial technique gradually evolved into an artistic and erotic practice during the 20th century, particularly developing from the 1950s onward.

At the heart of shibari is the relationship between the rigger and the model. It’s not just about tying — it’s about creating together. The rigger observes the model’s body, adapts the figures to their build and sensations, and communicates constantly. The model does not simply endure: they offer their body as a canvas, and their reactions become part of the creation.

Shibari ropes: materials

Material Features Ideal for
Cotton Flexible, soft, lightweight Beginners, sensitive skin
Jute Authentic, good knot grip Regular practitioners, traditional aesthetic
Hemp Similar to jute, more durable Advanced practitioners
Silk Ultra-soft, slippery Sensual practices, simple figures
Synthetic cotton (polyester) Affordable, easy to care for First purchase, exploration

How to choose your shibari ropes

Material according to your level

Beginners → cotton. Easy to handle, simple knots to undo, gentle on the skin. Intermediate → authentic jute. More traditional, with better knot grip. Experienced → treated jute or hemp. Premium materials for complex figures.

Length

To get started: 2 ropes of 7–8 metres. Enough for basic figures (chest harness, hip belt). To progress: 4–6 ropes of 8–10 metres. Allows you to create complex figures (box tie, corset, futomomo). Some highly advanced practitioners use 15-metre lengths, but this is rarely necessary.

The diameter

6mm is the Japanese standard. Thinner rope (4–5mm) cuts into the skin more and is uncomfortable. Thicker rope (8mm) becomes difficult to knot neatly. Stick to the standard unless you have a specific need.

Basic shibari ties

These are the fundamental ties that form the basis of all learning:

  • Single column tie (tama musubi). A basic knot for tying a wrist or ankle. The starting point for every tie.
  • Double column tie. A knot that binds two elements together (wrists together, or ankles together).
  • Takate kote (box tie). An arm harness secured behind the back. An iconic shibari tie.
  • Hishi (diamond). A diamond pattern across the body. Pure geometric beauty.
  • Futomomo. A thigh-to-calf tie, with the knee bent.

These ties must be learned. I strongly recommend taking a class, watching professional shibari videos, or buying a dedicated book before practicing seriously.

Shibari safety: the absolute rules

Improperly practiced shibari can cause nerve damage, circulation injuries, or falls during suspension. The non-negotiable safety rules:

  • Stay on the floor when starting out. Suspension requires specific training—don’t improvise.
  • Keep safety scissors within reach. Always have a pair of quick-release scissors ready to cut the rope in an emergency.
  • Avoid high-risk areas. Neck (arteries), armpits (nerves), groin, inner elbow (ulnar nerve), and the back of the knee.
  • Check circulation. Fingers should be warm, skin should have a normal color, and there should be no numbness.
  • Safe word. Mandatory. If they are unable to speak (gagged), agree on a nonverbal signal beforehand.
  • Hydration. Long sessions require water within reach.
  • After the session. The model may feel dizzy when being untied—stay close to help them down.

My experience with shibari rope in the shop

Over 10 years, I’ve seen growing interest in shibari. Couples who practice it seriously talk about it with a particular passion—it’s rarely just “another BDSM accessory.” Shibari often becomes a practice in its own right, with its own philosophy, learning process, and community. Customers who buy it regularly are often taking classes or workshops to improve.

My advice for a first purchase: invest in two good-quality 7–8-meter cotton ropes. That's more than enough to explore the basic ties for several months. You can add more ropes later as you progress. And take the time to train before practicing — shibari is learned over time, not through improvisation.

Common mistakes with shibari ropes

  • Practice without learning. Shibari requires specific knowledge — it cannot be improvised.
  • Attempt suspension too soon. Training is mandatory before any suspension.
  • Tie too tightly. Ropes should support, not compress. Check circulation continuously.
  • Neglect safety scissors. Always keep them within reach.
  • Choose poor-quality ropes. A rope breaking mid-scene is dangerous. Invest in good-quality materials.
  • Skip the aftercare phase. The model needs time after an intense session.

Shibari rope care

Cotton ropes should be hand-washed in lukewarm water and air-dried. Jute should not be washed — air it out and lightly singe it (an advanced technique). Store ropes neatly coiled in a breathable fabric bag. The intimate hygiene guide provides additional information.

Resources for learning shibari

There are several ways to progress in shibari. Reference books (Two Knotty Boys, Midori) explain the basics with precise illustrations. Specialized YouTube channels offer free tutorials for basic ties. Workshops and courses (offered within the BDSM community) provide hands-on learning with immediate feedback — the most effective way to progress. Some major French cities have shibari schools or collectives offering regular classes.

My advice from the boutique: before buying lots of rope, invest in a good book or workshop. Rope without technique leads to frustrating results — technique can radically transform your practice.

Going further

For other forms of restraint, explore handcuffs (quick to use), spreader bars (held positions), and BDSM harnesses (full-body restraint). BDSM kits sometimes include beginner ropes. The article consent and relationship dynamics covers the fundamentals of BDSM. This collection is part of the BDSM range.
