Condoms are the standard protection against most STIs and an effective contraceptive method. Beyond their protective function, the range available is extensive: classic, ultra-thin (maximum sensation), textured (for additional stimulation), flavored (for oral pleasure), made from latex or polyurethane (for people with allergies). The right condom can even enhance the intimate experience rather than limit it.
In summary: condoms = STI protection + contraception. Multiple varieties: classic, ultra-thin, textured, flavored, with or without latex, and various sizes. 98% effective when used correctly. The right choice = optimal comfort and sensation. An investment in health and peace of mind.
In-store, condoms are a regular purchase made without embarrassment. Customers come back regularly, sometimes try new ranges, and develop their preferences. The variety available (from basic condoms to custom-fit options) often comes as a surprise — 20 years ago, the options were much more limited than they are today.
Types of condoms
| Type | Feature | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Standard latex, 0.06–0.07 mm | Versatile regular use |
| Ultra-thin | 0.04–0.05 mm, maximum sensation | Sensations close to natural |
| Extra-thin (record-breaking) | Less than 0.04 mm, ultra-sensitive | Enhanced sensations |
| Textured (beads, ridges) | Textured surfaces for stimulation | Enhanced partner stimulation |
| Flavored | Flavor for oral pleasure | Pleasurable oral sex |
| Delay condoms (with benzocaine) | Light anesthetic | Premature ejaculation |
| Latex-free (polyurethane) | Allergy alternative | Latex allergies |
| Specific sizes | Slim, large, XL | Fit suited to your body shape |
How to choose your condoms
Size
The most important criterion. A poorly fitted condom = a real risk. Standard: 52 mm wide, 18 cm long — suitable for around 70% of men. Smaller (48–49 mm) or larger (54–60 mm): available in specific ranges. Measure the circumference at the thickest part of the erect penis, then divide by 3.14 to determine the nominal width. For a first purchase outside the standard size, choose a varied-size kit to identify the right fit.
Main use
For regular use with a steady partner: classic or ultra-thin, depending on your preferred sensation. For prolonged intercourse (anal or simply long-lasting): with a reinforced reservoir plus lubricant. Mostly oral pleasure: suitable flavored condoms. Premature ejaculation: delay condoms with benzocaine. Discovering new sensations: textured condoms.
The material
Latex: unless you have an allergy, it remains the standard choice — excellent elasticity, good sensation, reasonable price, and the most extensively documented protection. Polyurethane: thinner, conducts heat (a very natural sensation), compatible with all oils, and suitable for people with latex allergies. More expensive.
Thickness
Thinner = more sensation but slightly less resistance. Thicker = a greater perceived sense of security but less sensation. Most modern thicknesses are tested and safe, even ultra-thin ones. It comes down to personal preference between sensation and peace of mind.
How to use a condom correctly
Preliminary check
Check that the expiration date is legible. The packaging should be intact (no tears or suspicious bulges). Open it carefully without fingernails (to avoid tearing). The condom should roll down easily—if there is resistance, it may be the wrong way around.
Putting it on
On an erect penis. Pinch the reservoir tip to expel air before applying it. Place it on the glans and roll it down to the base. Check that it is properly in place and free of wrinkles.
During sex
Periodically check that it is still in place (during longer sex). If it feels as though the condom has slipped up or come off, check immediately. If you suspect it has broken, stop and replace it.
Withdrawal
Immediately after ejaculation, before losing the erection. Hold the base of the condom to prevent it from remaining inside your partner during withdrawal. Remove it gently. Tie off the end to prevent leakage. Throw it in the trash (not the toilet).
If a condom breaks
Stop immediately. Clean up quickly. Depending on the situation (pregnancy risk, STI risk), emergency contraception and/or a rapid STI test may be appropriate. If needed, consult a gynecologist or doctor within 72 hours for emergency contraception.
Mistakes that make condoms ineffective
- Oil or petroleum jelly with latex. It damages the material within minutes. Use a water- or silicone-based lubricant.
- Opening with teeth or fingernails. It may tear.
- Putting it on during sex rather than before starting. Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm and STIs.
- Using after the expiration date. The latex becomes weakened.
- Improper storage. A wallet heats up and damages latex. Prefer a pouch or a place that isn't heated.
- Double condoms. Paradoxically riskier—friction between the two can cause them to break.
- Incorrect size. Too large = slipping; too small = breaking.
Leading brands
Several brands dominate the market. Durex (British), the global leader, with a very broad range. Manix (French), the leading French brand. Skyn, a premium latex-free option. Hansaplast/MySize for custom-fit sizes. Einhorn (German), an ethical and eco-friendly brand. RFSU (Swedish), known for quality. Prices vary considerably depending on the format (boxes of 3–36) and type—generally €1–2 per condom on average.
My experience with condoms in the shop
In 10 years, the variety available has exploded. Customers are experimenting more and discovering that the right condom really changes their sensations. The most notable discoveries include ultra-thin condoms, which have won over many customers who were reluctant to use condoms because of reduced sensation; latex-free condoms, which have revealed previously unknown latex allergies in some customers; and custom-fit sizes, which have transformed the experience for those who didn’t fit standard sizes.
My advice for exploring: buy 2–3 different formats to try (ultra-thin, textured, flavored, for example). Total cost: €15–25. You’ll identify your actual preferences, which are often quite different from what you imagined. For regular use afterward, larger boxes (12–24 condoms) of your favorite offer the best value for money.
Female condoms
Female condoms (internal devices for women) are also available. Less well known and less commonly used, but still valid. They allow women to control their protection. They can be inserted several hours before intercourse. STI protection and contraception. Common commercial name: Femidom. An interesting option in some situations (a man reluctant to use a male condom, or for variety).
Condoms and STIs
Condoms effectively protect against most STIs transmitted through bodily fluids (HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B). Protection is partial against STIs transmitted through skin-to-skin contact (herpes, HPV, syphilis)—only the covered area is protected. For optimal STI protection, consistent use, regular screening, and HPV and hepatitis B vaccination are recommended.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–25°C), away from direct sunlight and humidity. Shelf life is 3–5 years depending on the brand (see the date on the packaging). Avoid wallets (high temperatures and friction) and cars (summer heat). Boxes, bedroom drawers, or dedicated bags are the best storage options. Check the date before each use.
Going further
To learn more, water-based lubricants are compatible with all condoms. Intimate care products complement them for daily hygiene. The condom guide covers every aspect. This collection is part of the well-being universe.
