Hybrid lubricant combines a water base and silicone to offer the best of both worlds: the extended staying power of silicone + the easy cleanup of water + compatibility with all sex toys (including silicone) + the silky feel of silicone. A smart compromise that solves the limitations of each pure type and simplifies the choice of lubricant for everyday use.
In summary: hybrid = mostly water-based + a smaller amount of silicone. Combines staying power with easy cleanup. Compatible with silicone sex toys (check specifically) and condoms. Active duration: 30–60 minutes (in between). Ideal for couples who own silicone sex toys and want good staying power. A rapidly growing category.
In our shop, hybrids have taken off over the past 5–6 years. Customers who used to have separate water- and silicone-based lubricants for different purposes are discovering that a single hybrid can cover most of their needs. A welcome simplification. Feedback has been very positive—many customers are replacing their two lubricants with a single hybrid.

Who is hybrid lubricant suitable for?
Couples with silicone sex toys + need for staying power
The perfect use case. You have silicone sex toys (the most popular in the premium category), but you find water-based lubricants too runny and too short-lasting. The hybrid solves your equation—compatible with your sex toys while offering better staying power.
Versatile users
If you alternate between regular vaginal sex, use with sex toys, and occasional light anal play—the hybrid covers all these uses without having to change bottles. A welcome simplification for everyday use.
Versatile beginners
For a first purchase when you want a solution that covers all your potential needs without investing in several types, a hybrid is an excellent choice. You’ll then know what you may still need to complete your collection.
Skin that don’t tolerate glycerin well
Some glycerin-free hybrids combine the benefits of silicone and water without the drawback of glycerin-based water-based formulas. A good alternative for sensitive skin.
How to choose your hybrid
The water/silicone ratio
More silicone = better staying power, but a higher risk of incompatibility with silicone sextoys. Less silicone = guaranteed compatibility but staying power close to that of pure water-based formulas. A balanced formula (70–80% water, 20–30% silicone) is generally the best compromise.
Explicit silicone sextoy compatibility
Reputable brands explicitly state “compatible with silicone sextoys” on the packaging. If it isn’t mentioned, be cautious—test it on a small area before full use with an expensive sextoy.
The ingredients
Check the ingredients as you would for a water-based lubricant: vaginally compatible pH, no glycerin if you’re sensitive, and no parabens. Good hybrid formulas maintain the quality standards of premium water-based lubricants.
Leading brands
Pjur MED Premium and Pjur Aqua Panthera as high-quality hybrids. Sliquid Silk with a natural formula. System Jo Hybrid, an established range. Swiss Navy Hybrid. €15–25 for 100 ml. A good hybrid lasts a long time thanks to its staying power.
Best uses
Use with silicone sextoys
Apply generously to the sextoy and/or intimate area. The silky feel of silicone + the protection of water = optimal glide without damaging your toy. It lasts long enough for a normal session without reapplication.
Long vaginal intercourse
Better staying power than pure water-based formulas. Intercourse lasting 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is covered without reapplication. Greater long-lasting comfort than water-based formulas.
Varied sessions
Masturbation + intercourse + break + resuming — a hybrid covers an entire session without requiring a change or frequent reapplication.
Beginner anal play
For beginner or gentle anal penetration, a hybrid provides enough staying power. For advanced anal play or use with large dilators, a specific anal lubricant is preferable.
My experience with hybrids in the shop
Over 10 years, I’ve seen hybrid lubricants become increasingly popular. Customers who used to have a water-based lubricant and a silicone one for different purposes discover that a single hybrid covers almost everything. It’s a practical, cost-effective simplification. I routinely recommend hybrids to couples who use silicone sextoys and found water-based formulas didn’t last long enough.
My advice for a first purchase: choose a hybrid from a specialized brand (Pjur, Sliquid, System Jo), 100 ml to try it in different situations, at a mid-range price (€18–25). If you own expensive silicone sextoys, explicitly check that it is labeled silicone-compatible and test it on a small area before first full use.
Limitations to know
- Intermediate staying power. Neither the short duration of water-based lubricants nor the maximum staying power of silicone.
- Limited water resistance. Not suitable for aquatic activities like pure silicone.
- Silicone sextoy compatibility must be checked. Not all formulas are guaranteed to be compatible.
- Mid-range price. More expensive than water-based lubricants, less expensive than some premium silicone lubricants.
- Cleaning is slightly more technical than with pure water-based lubricants. Mild soap is recommended.
Common mistakes
- Assuming silicone compatibility without checking. The packaging must explicitly state it.
- Expecting the same staying power as pure silicone. Hybrids last well, but not as long as silicone.
- Water use. Hybrids dilute in water—choose pure silicone instead.
- Low quality. Poorly formulated hybrids combine the drawbacks rather than the benefits.
- For advanced anal use only. Prefer a specialized anal lubricant.
Health and hybrids
Quality hybrids meet the health standards of good lubricants: compatible pH, a formula free from irritating ingredients, and dermatological testing. The proportion of silicone poses no health concern—medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic and well tolerated. For sensitive skin, glycerin-free and fragrance-free formulas are preferable.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from light. Shelf life: 12–24 months unopened, 6–12 months after opening. Hybrid formulas are generally stable, but always check their appearance before use (no separation of phases, normal color and smell).
