How to choose your hybrid

The water/silicone ratio

More silicone = better staying power, but a higher risk of incompatibility with silicone sextoys. Less silicone = guaranteed compatibility but staying power close to that of pure water-based formulas. A balanced formula (70–80% water, 20–30% silicone) is generally the best compromise.

Explicit silicone sextoy compatibility

Reputable brands explicitly state “compatible with silicone sextoys” on the packaging. If it isn’t mentioned, be cautious—test it on a small area before full use with an expensive sextoy.

The ingredients

Check the ingredients as you would for a water-based lubricant: vaginally compatible pH, no glycerin if you’re sensitive, and no parabens. Good hybrid formulas maintain the quality standards of premium water-based lubricants.

Leading brands

Pjur MED Premium and Pjur Aqua Panthera as high-quality hybrids. Sliquid Silk with a natural formula. System Jo Hybrid, an established range. Swiss Navy Hybrid. €15–25 for 100 ml. A good hybrid lasts a long time thanks to its staying power.

Best uses

Use with silicone sextoys

Apply generously to the sextoy and/or intimate area. The silky feel of silicone + the protection of water = optimal glide without damaging your toy. It lasts long enough for a normal session without reapplication.

Long vaginal intercourse

Better staying power than pure water-based formulas. Intercourse lasting 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is covered without reapplication. Greater long-lasting comfort than water-based formulas.

Varied sessions

Masturbation + intercourse + break + resuming — a hybrid covers an entire session without requiring a change or frequent reapplication.

Beginner anal play

For beginner or gentle anal penetration, a hybrid provides enough staying power. For advanced anal play or use with large dilators, a specific anal lubricant is preferable.

My experience with hybrids in the shop

Over 10 years, I’ve seen hybrid lubricants become increasingly popular. Limitations to know

• Intermediate staying power. Neither the short duration of water-based lubricants nor the maximum staying power of silicone.
• Limited water resistance. Not suitable for aquatic activities like pure silicone.
• Silicone sextoy compatibility must be checked. Not all formulas are guaranteed to be compatible.
• Mid-range price. More expensive than water-based lubricants, less expensive than some premium silicone lubricants.
• Cleaning is slightly more technical than with pure water-based lubricants. Mild soap is recommended.

Common mistakes

• Assuming silicone compatibility without checking. The packaging must explicitly state it.
• Expecting the same staying power as pure silicone. Hybrids last well, but not as long as silicone.
• Water use. Hybrids dilute in water—choose pure silicone instead.
• Low quality. Poorly formulated hybrids combine the drawbacks rather than the benefits.
• For advanced anal use only. Prefer a specialized anal lubricant.

Health and hybrids

Quality hybrids meet the health standards of good lubricants: compatible pH, a formula free from irritating ingredients, and dermatological testing. The proportion of silicone poses no health concern—medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic and well tolerated. For sensitive skin, glycerin-free and fragrance-free formulas are preferable.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from light. Shelf life: 12–24 months unopened, 6–12 months after opening. Hybrid formulas are generally stable, but always check their appearance before use (no separation of phases, normal color and smell).
